Egypt Diesel crisis 22/3/2012

No diesel in Egypt for over 3 days as public discontent grows, and government promises to solve the situation are vanishing into thin air.

Drivers and workers have been complaining about solar shortage all over Egypt for the past 3 days. Some say there in none at all except at the Watanya stations owned by the Egyptian military.

Ahmed, a microbus driver kept looking for diesel for over a week and finally fueled up at the Watanya gas station at al Hy Al Asher.

“I have been looking for Diesel for my vehicle for about a week now. Yesterday I started to look for Diesel since 5 AM, and there was none, I stayed at a gas station in Gesr Al Suez till 2 AM, and as Vehicles cramped to fuel up there was not enough Diesel.” Ahmed said.

Several fights over Diesel took place among drivers in many major gas stations in Nasr City, Gesr Al Suez, and the ring road.

Many drivers showed extreme discontent because of the continuous fuel problems amongst gas station all over Egypt. Transportation all across Egypt is paralyzed by the crisis amidst assurances by government officials that it Is being dealt with.

The Egyptian authorities on Tuesday night refused to allow entry of a Jordanian aid convoy called Ansar-1 bound for Gaza into Egyptian territories via the Nuweibi harbor citing absence of security approval.

Head of the convoy and chief of the Jordanian veterinary doctors union Abdul Fattah Al-Keilani said in press statements that the Egyptian foreign ministry had asked its Jordanian counterpart for a list of the members' names.

Keilani said that Cairo refused the entry of 138 members of the 150-member convoy including 17 women.

The convoy organizers held contacts with Jordanian officials to facilitate their humanitarian mission, and decided to stage a sit-in at the Egyptian consulate in Aqaba.

"AUC Lectures in the Nineties" Audio Documentary

Since the American university in Cairo was established in 1919, it played a major role in promoting an understanding across world cultures, regions, and religions. The university being in Egypt, a culturally rich country in every sense of the word, and an eminent country in the Middle East, was an additional asset to AUC’s mission of bringing together various cultures and ideas.

The AUC Administration managed to turn AUC into a melting pot, where cultural understanding is fostered through introducing a wide range of diversity. The faculty members at AUC, the staff, and the students all come from different countries, cultures, and social classes.

The interaction among people from different backgrounds in a liberal environment enriched the lives of many people involved with AUC along the years. Accordingly, AUC over the past century, contributed to culturally shaping many young minds that later became leaders on the Egyptian scene, and in the region of the Middle East like Gamal Moubarak.

The lectures given at AUC were always an extremely essential component to the role of AUC as a bridge, connecting many cultures, views and ideologies.
